Glossary

The terms you will meet in maker listings, retailer product pages, forum threads, and the rest of this guide. Grouped by subject rather than alphabetically, because most of these only make sense next to their neighbours.

Japanese script is given only where the spelling is standard and well attested. Where a cell reads "n/a", either the term is Western trade vocabulary with no Japanese equivalent, or the Japanese spelling is not confidently established. Romanization is without macrons throughout (Gyuto, not Gyūtō).

A note on how these words get used: a lot of the vocabulary in the Western Japanese-knife market is loose. Retailers, forums, and makers do not always agree, and some widely repeated "Japanese terms" in English-language sources are coinages that no Japanese workshop would recognise. Where usage is genuinely contested, it says so in the entry.


Blade anatomy

Term Japanese Definition
Kissaki 切先 The tip. Its shape varies by knife type, from the sheep-foot curve of a nakiri to the fine point of a sujihiki, and it governs piercing and detail work.
Mune 峰 (also 棟) The spine, the unsharpened back of the blade. Thickness and profile here affect balance, knuckle clearance, and comfort under a pinch grip.
Ha The cutting edge. Also appears as a suffix in compounds describing edge type (kataba, ryoba, hamaguri-ba).
Hasaki 刃先 The apex, the precise line where the bevels meet. This is where cutting actually happens, and it is what any sharpening session is aiming at.
Shinogi The ridge line where the bevel meets the flat upper part of the blade face. Most visible on single-bevel and wide-bevel knives, where it is both a geometric transition and a visual signature of the grind.
Kireha 切刃 The bevel face of a single-bevel knife, between the shinogi and the edge. Often called the "blade road" in English.
Hira The flat of the blade above the shinogi. Sometimes also given as tsura (面).
Ura The back face of a single-bevel knife, the side without the primary bevel.
Urasuki 裏すき The shallow concave hollow ground into the ura. It reduces contact area for easier release, and it is what makes flattening the back face a maintenance task rather than a one-time operation.
Omote The front, bevelled face of a single-bevel knife.
Ago The heel, the rearmost part of the edge. Used for tasks needing leverage. Sometimes translated as "chin".
Machi The notch dividing the blade proper from the tang. Split into ha-machi (edge side) and mune-machi (spine side). On many wa-handled knives a few millimetres of bare tang is deliberately left exposed at the machi so the handle can be tapped further on as the wood shrinks.
Nakago 中子 The tang. Wa-handled knives usually use a partial, tapered tang seated in a burned or drilled handle; yo-handled knives usually use a full tang with scales riveted to it.
Sori 反り The curvature of the edge profile from heel to tip. Flat sori suits push cutting (nakiri, usuba); more sori suits a rocking motion.
Hasuji 刃筋 The alignment of the blade through a cut, that is, whether the edge is travelling in the plane it is pointing in. Used in both cutting technique and sharpening discussion. Some English sources use it loosely to mean the edge line itself.
Hawatari 刃渡り Blade length. Note that measurement conventions vary between makers, and a stated 210 mm gyuto from two workshops can differ by several millimetres.
Blade height 刃幅 (ha-haba) Edge to spine distance, usually quoted at the heel in mm. More height means better knuckle clearance and a more stable feel; less means a lighter, nimbler knife.
Distal taper n/a The thinning of the blade from heel to tip. Well executed, it takes weight out of the tip without losing strength at the heel. A common quick check for hand-forged work, since machine-cut blanks often have a constant spine thickness.
Choil n/a The unsharpened notch or curve at the very base of the edge. A Western term more than a Japanese one, and many Japanese knives have a minimal choil or none at all.
Kaku-mune / Maru-mune 角峰 / 丸峰 Squared versus rounded spine. Rounding the spine and choil is extra hand work and one of the most reliable fit-and-finish tells between price tiers.
Mei The maker's mark: stamped, engraved, or chiselled. Attribution is not always straightforward, since a mark may belong to a house, a retailer, or a brand rather than the person who forged the blade.
Bolster n/a A thickened metal collar between blade and handle, common on yo-handle knives and rare on traditional Japanese ones. Adds forward balance, but can obstruct sharpening at the heel.

Blade shapes

Short definitions only. See the Blade Shapes section for full entries.

Term Japanese Definition
Gyuto 牛刀 Double-bevel general-purpose knife, the Japanese take on the Western chef's knife. Literally "cow sword". Most common shape in the modern market.
Santoku 三徳 Shorter, flatter, lower general-purpose double bevel with a sheep-foot tip. "Three virtues".
Bunka 文化 Santoku-like profile with an angled reverse-tanto tip (the "K-tip").
Ko-bunka n/a A petty-length bunka.
Nakiri 菜切り Flat-profiled double-bevel vegetable knife, used with a push or chop motion.
Usuba 薄刃 Single-bevel vegetable knife, flat profile, used for katsuramuki and other precision work. Kanto and Kansai variants differ in tip shape.
Petty n/a Small utility knife, typically 120 to 150 mm. The Japanese-market equivalent of a Western utility or large paring knife.
Sujihiki 筋引き Long, narrow double-bevel slicer for portioning cooked and boneless proteins.
Yanagiba 柳刃 Long single-bevel slicer for sashimi, drawn through the fish in one stroke. "Willow blade".
Takobiki 蛸引き Yanagiba equivalent with a squared-off tip, historically associated with the Kanto region.
Deba 出刃 Thick single-bevel fish knife, heavy at the heel for light bone contact, tapering toward the tip for filleting.
Ko-deba 小出刃 A small deba for smaller fish and detail work.
Mioroshi n/a A longer, thinner deba variant used to fillet larger fish in a single stroke. Sits between deba and yanagiba.
Funayuki 舟行 Light, compact fish knife, historically associated with boat use. Made in both single and double bevel.
Honesuki 骨スキ Stiff, pointed poultry boning knife with a triangular profile.
Garasuki n/a A larger, heavier honesuki for breaking down whole birds.
Kiritsuke 切付 Long knife with an angled tip. Traditionally single-bevel and associated with senior chefs; the double-bevel "kiritsuke gyuto" sold widely today is a different and much more forgiving knife.
Mukimono 剥き物 The decorative vegetable-carving discipline, and by extension thin knives suited to it.

Construction and lamination

Term Japanese Definition
Hagane The hard, high-carbon core steel that carries the edge in a laminated blade. A general term, not a specific alloy.
Jigane 地鉄 The softer iron or low-carbon cladding around the hagane. Adds toughness, and takes a different polish, which is what produces kasumi contrast.
Gokunantetsu 極軟鉄 Very soft iron used as cladding. Prized for how readily it takes a hazy finish against the core.
San-mai 三枚 Three-layer construction: hard core between two cladding layers. The most common laminate on modern double-bevel knives.
Nimai / Kata-ha 二枚 / 片刃 Two-layer construction, one cladding layer welded to one core layer. Common on traditional single bevels.
Warikomi 割り込み Laminate made by splitting or slotting the soft outer body and inserting the hard core, rather than wrapping or stacking it.
Kobuse 甲伏 Hard steel wrapped around a softer core. More a swordmaking method than a kitchen knife one, though it turns up in specialty work.
Honyaki 本焼き Forged from a single piece of high-carbon steel and differentially hardened, with no cladding. The most demanding traditional construction, high failure rate in the making, and less forgiving in use and in sharpening.
Mizu-honyaki 水本焼き Water-quenched honyaki, as opposed to oil quenched. Higher risk in the quench, and commonly held to produce a more dramatic hamon. Whether it performs differently is debated.
Monosteel n/a Single steel throughout with no cladding. Simplifies sharpening, since there is no soft jigane behaving differently from the core.
Suminagashi 墨流し Layered pattern produced by folding and forge-welding contrasting steels, then etching. Named after an ink-marbling technique.
Damascus n/a Western trade term applied to any visibly layered cladding, hand-forged or machine-rolled. It describes appearance only and says nothing about the core steel or the quality of the knife.
Forge welding 鍛接 (tansetsu) Joining steels by heating to bonding temperature and hammering or pressing them together. The basis of all laminate construction. Requires clean surfaces and tight temperature control to avoid voids.
Hand-forged n/a Shaped substantially by hammer rather than ground from bar stock. Implies more individual involvement and more variation between pieces, but is not on its own a guarantee of performance.
Stock removal n/a Shaping a blade by grinding away material from flat bar stock. Faster and more consistent than forging. Whether it matters to the finished knife is one of the longest-running arguments in the hobby, and the honest answer is that heat treatment and grinding matter more.

Steel

Term Japanese Definition
Shirogami 白紙 "White steel". Simple, high-purity carbon steel with few alloying elements. Widely associated with ease of sharpening and a very fine edge, and with high reactivity. Sold in numbered grades differing mainly in carbon content.
Aogami 青紙 "Blue steel". Carbon steel with chromium and tungsten added. Generally better edge retention than shirogami, slightly more work on the stones. Numbered grades plus Aogami Super, which is harder and holds longer again.
Ginsan 銀三 Short for "silver three". A stainless steel widely described as behaving more like carbon steel on the stones than most stainless does, without the rust maintenance. Popular with traditional makers.
VG-10 n/a A very common mid-tier and premium production stainless. Practical balance of retention, corrosion resistance, and sharpenability. Sometimes criticised for a tendency to microchip, though heat treatment varies a lot between makers.
SG2 / R2 n/a Powder stainless with fine, uniform carbide structure, run at higher hardness than most conventional stainless. Two names for what is generally treated as the same steel. Strong retention, more effort to sharpen.
Tamahagane 玉鋼 Steel made by the traditional tatara smelt from iron sand. Closely tied to swordmaking. Appears in kitchen knives only rarely, in limited runs, and is bought for what it is rather than for measurable performance.
Carbon steel 炭素鋼 (tanso-ko) Steel hardened primarily by carbon, with little or no chromium. Sharpens finely, rusts readily, requires drying after use.
Stainless steel ステンレス鋼 Steel with enough chromium (roughly 13 percent or more) to resist surface corrosion. Trades some of the edge feel and sharpening ease of carbon for far lower maintenance.
Semi-stainless n/a Loose market term for steels with meaningful rust resistance but below the stainless threshold. A convenience label rather than a metallurgical category.
Powder steel 粉末鋼 (funmatsu-ko) Steel made by atomising the melt and sintering the powder, giving finer and more evenly distributed carbides than ingot steel. Supports higher hardness and finer edges, at higher cost.
Reactive n/a Trade shorthand for a steel that discolours in contact with acidic food. Describes day-to-day behaviour, not a formal classification.
Patina n/a The stable grey, blue, or brown oxide layer that develops on carbon steel with use. Distinct from rust, and mildly protective. Many owners encourage it; some force it with mustard or vinegar to get past the blotchy early stage faster.
HRC n/a Rockwell C hardness, the standard figure quoted for edge steel. Useful for rough comparison, but a number without knowing the steel and the heat treatment behind it tells you little.
Alloying element n/a Anything beyond iron and carbon added to modify properties: chromium for corrosion resistance, vanadium and tungsten for wear resistance and carbide formation, molybdenum for hardenability and toughness.
Carbide 炭化物 (tankabutsu) Hard particles formed when carbon bonds with alloying elements. More and larger carbides mean better wear resistance, but can make an edge harder to refine to a fine apex and more prone to chipping out.
Grain n/a The steel's crystal structure. Finer and more uniform grain supports a finer, more stable edge. Influenced by alloy, forging, and heat treatment.
Edge retention n/a How long an edge stays usefully sharp. Depends on steel, hardness, geometry, and what you are cutting. Often described as trading off against ease of sharpening, which is broadly true but not a fixed law.
Toughness n/a Resistance to chipping and cracking, distinct from hardness. A very hard steel can be brittle. Heat treatment is where the balance is actually set.
Edge stability n/a The practical outcome of steel, hardness, and geometry together: whether the apex rolls, chips, or holds under real use. More useful as a concept than either hardness or toughness alone.

Heat treatment

Term Japanese Definition
Heat treatment 熱処理 (netsu shori) The controlled heating and cooling that sets hardness and internal structure. Has at least as much influence on how a knife performs as the choice of alloy, and varies between makers using the same nominal steel.
Yaki-ire 焼き入れ The quench. Rapid cooling from critical temperature in water, oil, or another medium to lock in a hardened structure. Faster media give more hardness and more risk of warping or cracking.
Yaki-modoshi 焼き戻し Tempering. A controlled reheat after quenching that trades a little peak hardness for a large gain in toughness. Untempered steel is too brittle to use.
Differential hardening n/a Producing different hardness in different parts of one blade, usually by clay-coating the spine before the quench. Hard edge, tougher spine. The visible result is a hamon.
Hamon 刃文 The line marking the boundary between hardened and unhardened steel on a differentially hardened blade, revealed by polishing or etching. Its shape reflects the smith's clay work.
Austenite / Martensite n/a The high-temperature phase steel must reach before quenching, and the hard phase it becomes when cooled fast enough. Martensite gives hardness and brittleness; tempering moderates the latter.
Retained austenite n/a Austenite that fails to convert during the quench, leaving soft pockets in the structure. Cryogenic treatment is one way of dealing with it.
Cryogenic treatment n/a An optional sub-zero step used by some makers to convert retained austenite. How much difference it makes depends on the steel and on the quality of the rest of the heat treatment.
Decarburization n/a Loss of carbon from the steel's surface during high-temperature work. The soft layer is normally ground away; excessive decarb from poor process control can affect hardness at the edge.

Grinds and edge geometry

Term Japanese Definition
Kataba 片刃 Single bevel. Ground on one face with the other relieved. Very precise and clean-releasing for its tasks, but handedness-specific and a much steeper learning curve to sharpen.
Ryoba 両刃 Double bevel. Ground on both faces, usually but not always symmetrically. Standard on gyuto, santoku, bunka, and most modern knives.
Migi-ba / Hidari-ba 右刃 / 左刃 Right- and left-handed single-bevel grinds. Left-handed versions are usually special order and carry a premium.
Grind n/a Umbrella term for the blade's cross-section: how thickness is distributed from spine to edge and from heel to tip. More a Western usage than a fixed Japanese one, but it is the single most useful thing to know about a knife.
Flat grind n/a Blade face running in a straight plane down to the edge. Predictable to sharpen and generally good release.
Full flat grind n/a Flat all the way from spine to edge with no shinogi break in the face. Common on Western-influenced double bevels.
Convex grind n/a Face curving outward in cross-section. Adds material behind the edge for strength, at some cost to glide.
Hamaguri-ba 蛤刃 Clamshell edge: a convex profile at the edge itself rather than a flat secondary bevel. Trades a little cutting ease for resistance to chipping and rolling.
Wide bevel n/a A single-bevel or single-bevel-style grind with an unusually tall bevel face relative to blade height. Exposes more of the jigane and hagane boundary, and is more work to maintain, since sharpening eventually requires reworking the whole bevel.
Koba 小刃 Secondary bevel. A narrower bevel behind the primary grind, at a slightly steeper angle, added to reinforce the edge or simplify maintenance.
Micro-bevel n/a A very small koba at a steeper angle, used to stabilise an otherwise very acute edge. Common fix for a knife that chips.
Behind-the-edge thickness n/a How thick the blade is a few millimetres above the apex. Far more predictive of cutting feel than spine thickness or edge angle, and the main thing thinning addresses.
Taper n/a The progressive thinning of the cross-section, either spine to edge or heel to tip.
Sharpening angle 研ぎ角度 (togi kakudo) The angle held against the stone, stated per side from the centreline. Japanese knives are typically taken to narrower angles than Western ones, which is part of the reputation for cutting feel and part of the reason they chip more easily when misused.
Wedging n/a When a blade splits a dense ingredient apart ahead of the edge instead of cutting through it, felt as sudden resistance in things like carrots and potatoes. A geometry problem, not a sharpness problem.
Food release n/a Whether cut material falls away from the blade face or sticks to it. Influenced by convexity, surface finish, and texture such as tsuchime. Good release and effortless glide pull in opposite directions, and no knife maximises both.
Laser / Workhorse n/a The two poles of the geometry trade-off. See Market and enthusiast slang.

Sharpening

Term Japanese Definition
Togishi 研ぎ師 A sharpening specialist. Covers everyone from production sharpeners inside a workshop to independent professionals doing restoration and finish work. Implies trained skill, not just someone who owns stones.
Kaeri / Burr 返り The thin ribbon of displaced metal raised along the apex when both bevels finally meet. Raising one along the full edge is the standard checkpoint that you have actually sharpened rather than polished. Also called a wire edge.
Deburring n/a Removing the burr, with progressively lighter strokes or a strop. Skipping it leaves an edge that feels sharp on the first cut and fails immediately after.
Stropping n/a Final refinement on leather, balsa, or fabric, sometimes with abrasive compound. Removes remaining burr and refines the apex without meaningful material loss.
Edge-leading / Edge-trailing n/a Whether the edge or the spine goes first across the stone. Leading cuts faster and raises a burr efficiently; trailing is gentler and standard on strops and finishing stones.
Freehand n/a Sharpening by hand without an angle guide. Standard practice among togishi and most experienced users, because a guide cannot follow the curve of the edge near the tip and heel.
Sharpening jig n/a A mechanical guide holding a fixed angle. Effective for beginners and for flat-profiled knives, awkward on curved profiles and on tall single bevels.
Uraoshi 裏押し Flattening the ura of a single-bevel knife against a stone to maintain the flat rim around the urasuki. Routine and necessary maintenance; done carelessly it destroys the hollow, which is expensive to correct.
Thinning n/a Grinding material off the blade face above the edge to restore geometry lost after many sharpenings. Not routine sharpening, and on wide-bevel and single-bevel knives it is often sent to a specialist.
Kasumi-togi 霞研ぎ Working the blade face with finishing stones to restore the contrast between jigane and hagane after sharpening. A finish task rather than an edge task.
Kesho-togi 化粧研ぎ Cosmetic finishing work on the blade face, distinct from sharpening the edge. Usually offered as a separate service, and mostly relevant to single-bevel and higher-end blades.
Convexing n/a Deliberately rounding the edge bevel rather than keeping it flat, for durability at some cost to glide.
Touch-up n/a A short pass on a single medium or fine stone to restore a slightly dulled edge. Doing this often is much easier than rescuing a badly dulled knife occasionally.
Honing rod n/a A steel or ceramic rod for realigning a rolled edge. A Western maintenance habit more than a Japanese one, and aggressive rod use on hard Japanese steel is more likely to chip an edge than straighten it.

Stones

Term Japanese Definition
Toishi 砥石 Whetstone. The general term, natural or synthetic, at any grit.
Arato 荒砥 Coarse stone. Repair, reprofiling, chip removal, thinning. Removes material fast and leaves a scratch pattern the later stones have to clear.
Nakato 中砥 Medium stone. The main working stage, and for most people the only stone strictly necessary for a usable edge.
Shiageto 仕上げ砥 Finishing stone. Refines the apex and, on clad blades, can be used on the face to develop a kasumi finish.
Grit progression n/a The planned sequence coarse to fine, each stage clearing the scratch pattern of the last. Skipping steps saves time but leaves deeper scratches incompletely refined.
JIS grit n/a The Japanese Industrial Standard rating used on most Japanese synthetics. Not directly interchangeable with ANSI, FEPA, or micron ratings, because the measurement methods differ. Treat cross-standard comparisons as approximate.
Synthetic stone 人造砥 (jinzo-to) Manufactured from bonded abrasive. Consistent grit, hardness, and speed batch to batch, which is why they dominate practical use.
Natural stone 天然砥 (tennen-to) Quarried stone. Varies widely in composition and behaviour even within one quarry, which is both the appeal and the difficulty.
Awasedo 合わせ砥 General term for fine natural finishing stones, used at the polishing end of a progression.
Aoto 青砥 A traditional natural stone type used in the medium role.
Uchigumori 内曇 Fine natural finishing stone associated with sword polishing and with kasumi work on kitchen knives, valued for the hazy finish it leaves on jigane.
Nagura 名倉 A small stone rubbed on a finishing stone to raise slurry. Grit and mineral character vary, and the choice changes the result.
Tomonagura 共名倉 A nagura cut from the same stone as the one it is used on, so the slurry matches the base stone.
Slurry n/a The paste of loosened abrasive and water on the stone surface. Thicker slurry generally cuts faster and finishes hazier; a clean surface refines further and polishes brighter.
Splash-and-go n/a Trade term for a stone needing only a brief wetting rather than a soak. Not a Japanese technical term.
Soaking stone n/a A stone that must be immersed until saturated before it performs. Using one dry gives slow, inconsistent results.
Dishing n/a The concave hollow that develops in a stone with use. It changes the effective contact and angle, so it has to be corrected.
Flattening 面直し (men-naoshi) Restoring a dished stone to flat, with a flattening plate or a coarser stone. Routine maintenance, not an occasional repair.
Diamond plate n/a Diamond abrasive bonded to a metal or resin base. Used for flattening stones and, in some systems, for sharpening directly. Cuts fast, wears slowly, and behaves quite differently from a toishi.
Feedback n/a How a stone feels and sounds under the blade: fast, muddy, glassy, gritty. Experienced sharpeners use it to judge progress without stopping to look. Entirely subjective and heavily discussed anyway.

Finishes

Term Japanese Definition
Kurouchi 黒打ち The dark forge scale left on the blade face, with only the bevel area polished. Saves finishing labour, and is now also chosen deliberately for the rustic look. The scale wears off unevenly over years of use.
Migaki 磨き Fully ground and polished bright, with all forge scale removed.
Kasumi The two-tone misty finish on a clad blade, with matte jigane against brighter hagane. Both a construction (hard core, soft cladding) and the finishing work that brings out the contrast. Degrades with sharpening and is restored by kasumi-togi.
Nashiji 梨地 A fine pebbled texture, named for the skin of a Japanese pear.
Tsuchime 槌目 Hammered dimpling on the blade face, hand-hammered or press-stamped. Commonly credited with improving food release. The effect is real but modest, and often overstated in marketing.
Damascus / etched cladding n/a Layered cladding brought out by acid etching, which reacts differently with the different steels. Cosmetic. It tells you nothing about the core.
Mirror polish n/a Fully reflective finish worked through progressively finer abrasives. Largely aesthetic, and most often seen on honyaki and presentation pieces. Shows every subsequent scratch.
Satin / hairline n/a Low-lustre production finishes, hairline being fine uniform parallel lines. Both hide handling marks better than a mirror finish.
Stonewash / bead blast n/a Matte, mottled or uniform finishes produced by tumbling or media blasting. Western production practice rather than traditional Japanese, chosen for hiding wear.
As-forged n/a Surface left as it came off the hammer, forging marks visible. Overlaps with kurouchi but used more broadly.

Handles and fittings

Term Japanese Definition
Wa-handle 和柄 Traditional Japanese handle, usually octagonal, oval, or D-shaped, typically a single piece of light wood over a partial tang. Light, which pushes balance forward, and simple to replace.
Yo-handle 洋柄 Western-style handle, scales riveted to a full tang. Heavier, more neutral or handle-forward in balance, and not practically replaceable at home.
Ho wood Japanese magnolia, the default wa-handle wood. Light, cheap, easy to work, and quick to replace, which is the point.
Kuchigane 口金 The ferrule between handle and blade, commonly buffalo horn or resin. Reinforces the wood where it meets the tang. Also called kakumaki (角巻) in some usage.
Saya A wooden sheath, usually ho wood, held by a pin. Standard for storage and transport, particularly on single bevels.
Rehandle n/a Replacing the handle. Straightforward on a friction-fit wa-handle and a common first project in the hobby; not really an option on a riveted yo-handle.
Handle collar gap n/a A visible gap where the handle meets the ferrule or tang shoulder. A fit-and-finish marker, and a route for moisture to the tang over time.
Balance point n/a Where the knife balances when supported from below, usually described relative to the machi. Preference is genuinely personal, and blade-forward versus neutral is not a quality question.

Market and enthusiast slang

Mostly Western retail and forum vocabulary. Little of it has a Japanese equivalent.

Term Definition
Laser A very thin, light knife ground for minimal resistance. Excellent through produce, less forgiving of lateral stress and hard contact.
Workhorse A thicker, heavier knife with more material behind the edge. More forgiving and more durable, less effortless through dense ingredients. The usual recommendation for a first Japanese knife.
Puck Mildly critical term for a knife thick enough behind the edge that durability no longer justifies the loss in cutting performance.
Grail A knife someone is chasing: limited output, long waitlist, or a strong maker reputation. Not a fixed price threshold.
Sleeper A knife regarded as underpriced for what it is, usually because it has not yet drawn wide attention.
Beater A cheap or expendable knife kept for rough work so the good ones are not risked on bone or frozen food.
Cult maker A smith or house with a following well out of proportion to their production volume.
Fit and finish Handle fit, spine and choil rounding, evenness of grind lines, general assembly quality. Separate from how the knife cuts, and the most common thing reviews actually measure.

Out-of-box sharpness How sharp a knife arrives. Varies widely by workshop, and is unrelated to how well the edge holds afterwards.
Wabi-sabi Borrowed aesthetic term for the appeal of visible forging marks, asymmetry, and rustic finishes rather than uniform machine polish.
Production vs hand-forged Machine-made in volume versus individually hammered. The performance argument between them is unresolved and probably unresolvable, since heat treatment and grinding dominate the outcome either way.
Full custom / semi-custom Made to a buyer's specification, versus limited buyer choice (handle, length, finish) within an otherwise standard model.
Collab / retailer exclusive A run produced by a maker to a retailer's specified handle, finish, or steel, sold only through that retailer. Very common in the current market.
Drop / restock / waitlist Release of a new batch, replenishment of a sold-out item, and a queue for allocation. Standard mechanics for high-demand makers.
Community reporting Information from forums, Discord, or informal discussion rather than a documented source. Used in this guide with hedged language and never stated as settled fact.
